Setting up terrain for a game of BLKOUT is incredibly important. We often receive feedback from players who set up fairly empty boards, resulting in immense amounts of killing. Designing a wargame around terrain specifically is challenging, so all we can do is offer suggestions on how to set up terrain effectively.
That's why BLKOUT specifically offers the Space Elevator Terrain Set. Not only is it a great terrain set, but it's also perfect for playing BLKOUT. This way, you're not scrounging around for Warhammer ruins that allow line of sight to everything on the table.
Let's break down a basic example:
This is a 2x2ft board. 2x2ft boards are great for getting in basic games and using the skirmish rules for BLKOUT, where each model acts on its own. This setup uses the Space Elevator Set, a buggy vehicle model, and some extra crates.
The three biggest things you want to look for are:
-
Line of sight from one board edge to another
-
You do not want to be able to walk a unit onto the board and immediately blast another unit across the board with shooting actions.
-
-
Good height variation
-
BLKOUT plays with height very well, rewarding players for taking risks to get to higher sections of the board. The game further incentivizes this by giving certain units jump abilities and more.
-
-
Plenty of corners and low-level terrain
-
Corners give models the ability to lean out and provide great cover, while objects like the buggy allow models to advance up to them and gain cover. This means you have room to maneuver and get across the board.
-
Good rules of thumb:
-
No more than 12" of unobstructed line of sight on a 2x2, and 18" on a 3x3.
-
Have enough free space to place a Duster model in several spots.
-
Always discuss terrain beforehand and how it impacts the game.
